Basil
Valdez began his professional singing career as a vocalist for the
Circus Band during the '70s. Acknowledged then as a "kilabot
ng mga kolehiyala," together with Hajji Alejandro, Pabs Dadivas
and Richard Tan, it was easy for Basil to secure a solo record deal
with Blackgold Records when the group's original lineup disbanded.
The release of Basil's first album the ultra successful "Ngayon
At Kailanman" saw a superstar on the rise. Not only did the
soft-spoken singer followed it up with a slew of charttoppers as
"You," "Kahit Ika'y Panaginip Lang," "Sometime,
Somewhere," "Nais Ko," but he also influenced how
a nation viewed excellent singing style for males. Everywhere, every
aspiring male singer wanted to sound like Basil. Singing contests,
whether big or small, would always have at least one Basil sound-alike.
The phenomena even reached the point when professional male singers
would dress up like the debonair singer (coat and tie)! In the '80s,
Basil assumed another title: Movie Theme Song King. High-profile
film projects would not be as illustrious if their soundtracks did
not carry a Basil Valdez tune. Among the most memorable were "Paano
Ba Ang Mangarap," "Muling Buksan Ang Puso" and "Paraisong
Parisukat." Later, Basil extended his Midas touch by turning
inspirational songs into mainstream classics. Biggest were "Hindi
Kita Malilimutan," "Tanging Yaman" and "Lift
Up Your Hands."outmany
